Eliminate the Coin-Toss for NFL OTs.  Instead, the team that that has the ball at the end of regulation receives the OT kick-off.  It's not a perfect solution but at least it has some relation to the play on the field (and it would make for some interesting end-of-the-regulation tactics:  Stop the clock to force a punt and obtain possession in regulation; score a TD on the last play of regulation and either go for 2-pts for the win or be faced with kicking off in OT.....)

Football--eliminate illegal motion if minor, having a lineman bob his head and then get a foul is a wast.  Would love to know how many of these stop drives.  Two--block in the back on run backs.  As long as it's above the waist, who cares.  Again, how many ruin field position and didn't really affect the run back.  Would love to know what percentage of these two fouls make up total called.

Here's how to decide who gets the ball 1st in OT:  the home team.  It's called home field advantage for a reason.  This way your not deciding who gets the ball w/ a 50/50 coin flip.

Kick offs have been moved back to the thirty yard line and still the number of touchbacks grows. 50+ field goal kicks are almost common place. I say adopt the CFL neutral zone of 10 yards between two fifty yard lines.

Eliminate the ripped football by a group mugging of the carrier.  If the ball is legimately lost then instant replay can determine but please let's remove the stain on the sport of allowing ball carriers to get mugged.

Play soccer games with two balls at the same time.  That way 20+ people don't have to fight over the same ball and makes offense and defensive decisions interesting.

In college and pro football, mandate that all play-calling--both on offense and defense--be made by players on the field.  No more radio helmets, no more signals flashed by four coaches or players on a sideline, no more teams going to the line, then standing up to look at the four coaches or players, and no more hideously large signs being flashed to the players who stand up to look after going to the line of scrimmage.  Guaranteed to see much more interesting action and it will reward the team that prepares better.  It also magnifies the home field advantage.  It will also reward the truly genius coaches who prepare the players to excel without a coach constantly telling them which foot to place in front of the other.

In basketball, mandate the coaches to sit in their assigned chair while the ball is in play.  I am tired of seeing Ben Howland try to be the sixth man when his team is on defense.  I am tired of Tom Izzo standing on the court while the game is going on because he is worried that his team won't hear every morsel of genius that spews from his mouth.  If you are worth anything as a coach, your preparation leading up to the game should be enough to make your team ready.

Since there is all the hype about NBA NFL Pro baseball etc ( all profrssional  atheletes) "giving back to the community how about having the courage to demand acceptable behavior from these "Role Models" fior the kids in this country/ world.

I propose   1st misdemeanor    30 day suspension   2nd misdemeanor  Balance of the season    3rd and out.

1st felony   season suspension   second violation of any kind,  out

Any gun or drug violation to be treated as a felony.

After all we pay these people in the aggregate Billions of Dollars to persue their talents  we should be able to expect civilized behavior in return and an example of the real consequences to the kids concerning what will/can happen

In NFL, I know alot of you will think this is absurd, but get rid of the hard plastic helmets. Go back to softer padded leather. There are way too many "leading with the helmet" tackles which lead to injury. This must be stopped. Players would be far more careful about head contact if not wearing hard plastic. For all you macho men who think injury is part of the game, have YOU ever had a concussion? I didn't think so. Make football less barbaric.

Get rid of the two week wait for the Super Bowl. The game has been played a few times the next week after the conference championships and were better games because neither team lost any momentum.  The stupid hype leading up to the game is a real distraction and really serves no purpose other than allowing pontificators to hear their own voices. Besides, who wants to hear some hearfelt story about the third-string center's brother who is battling terminal gout?

They should completely eliminate the intentional grounding penalty and instead spot the ball where the QB is when he throws an incomplete pass. Throwing the ball away is the most boring play in football. Furthermore, defenses that are able to pressure the QB deserve to be rewarded for their efforts.

Wouldn't eliminating the intentional grounding penalty actually hurt the defense and help the offense?  I believe the penalty yardage (10 yards or the ball is placed from the spot of the pass if it was beyond 10 yards back) and loss of down is penalty enough for the offense.  In your scenario, if a QB throws it away, even if from just 5 yards back, the offense simply loses the 5 yards, but retains the extra down.

                      Maybe I'm missing something...???

Maybe....what I mean is that throwing an incomplete pass from five yards behind the line of scrimmage would have the exact same result as sacking the QB five yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Basketball has a fundamental problem in that the defense is actually rewarded for fouling a player on the offensive team. The reward comes in the form of stopping the clock and, more importantly, preventing the offensive from trying to complete the play and likely scoring a basket. For example, soccer and hockey have rules to discourage fouling while still allowing the play to continue until the offense either scores or the play is deemed to have been effectively brought to a halt by the team that caused the foul. In soccer, it's called the "advantage rule" because the defense should never be allowed to gain an advantage by fouling. In hockey, the referee raises his hand to show that a penalty has ocurred but the play is allowed to continue until either a goal is scored by the offense or the defense touches or gains control of the puck. In both cases, the player who committed the foul is still penalize--but not until the official finally blows the whistle when the offensive team has lost its opportunity to score. No sport should reward fouls. That's why they call them "fouls." Basketball needs to adopt a similar rule to discourage so much fouling, especially at the end of the game. Fouls cheapen the sport, disrupt the flow of play, and reward teams that lack the athletic ability to compete head to head.

I totally agree with Gary H.! Basketball is a great fast-paced sport, and the constant fouling ruins the flow of the game, especially at the end of a contest.  Inside of two minutes, the team that was fouled should have the option of taking the ball out of bounds or shooting the foul shots.  And since we all know that at the end of a game that 90% of fouls for teams that are behind are intentional; they make no effort to go for the ball.  Instead they just grab the player trying to make the play.  These should be two shots and the ball.  A team that is behind at the end of the game is behind for a reason, but turning a basketball game with two minutes to go into a foul shooting contest that lasts for 20 minutes is not basketball anymore.  And finally, timeouts should never be a strategic part of any sport.  TV timeouts are a travesty.  But we all know that sports aren't sports anymore, they are businesses.  But using timeouts at the end of a great game as part of the strategy of the game just ruins the sport.  They have 12 guys on the bench.  If you need a rest, then come out of the game and put someone else in.  Each team should get one timeout per half at the most.  Cutting out timouts and constant fouling will improve the sport not hurt it.

Basketball is a wonderful game to play and watch.  I have thought about it for years and if I was still playing would have liked these rules.  Forty-five minute halves with a running clock.   Eliminate all the timeouts except maybe one like in hockey.  Also like hockey let them have free substitution behind the ball as long as it doen't affect play.  And then the big rule.  No freethrows.  Penalty boxes by the scorers table and a foul is 30 seconds in the box for the player plus loss of possession.  Shooting foul could be one minute in the box.  There would be 5 on 4 situations and even 5 on 3 situations.  Lets get away from all those stopped clocks and boring freethrows.  One last thing, get rid of that out of bounds line behind the basket.    Let them go back there, who cares, its pretty hard to score from back there anyway.

No more blows to the head by anybody!!  This includes stiff arms from running backs.  If it is illegal to head slap on defense or on offense and it is illegal to "touch" anybody above the shoulder pads anymore, why is it legal for a 260 lb full back to punch a db or lb in the face when he's trying to tackle??

it is legal because in this case, it is used to protect the back. yes, the "punch in the face" by the running back seems like it is unfair, but when you stiff arm a 280 pound wall of muscle coming towards you at full steam, the effect on the defender is minimal. it is usually only enough to stop his forward momentum, rather than causing some sort of devastating impact.

Protect the back?? Are you nuts??  Watch the neck of the defenders.  I have an unusual perspective because I both played the game at his level and I'm a physician now who takes care of acute and chronic neck injuries.  If it is illegal in all other cases for defending ones self or not, I still hear no good argument why they can strike a blow or grab and twist a helmet when no one else can.  I've seen numerous injuries in the acute phase and many that are chronic that can be attributed to the torque and or acute axial loading injuries such as this. It is wrong for all not just some!

Soccer--do away with the offsides rule--end up with more fast breaks.  Do away with the goalie--more goals.

Football--the clock stops with a timeout, injury, or penalty, only.

Baseball--get rid of Bud Selig.  Institute hard salary cap.

The last two minutes of college games simply take too long to play. Two minutes can turn into 10 minutes. Too often teams that are behind by insurmountable leads just delay the inevitable by continuing to foul.

Here's my idea - when a team that is behind in the last two minutes fouls a player the team that is ahead has the option of shooting free throws or taking 5 seconds off the game clock. Of course if a game was neck and neck most coaches would take the free throws. However, if a team was ahead by more than 10 points they might just take the time off the clock.

Get the politics out of sports.  Our national leaders have much more important things to discuss then whether or not Sammy Sosa is shooting up.  If a sports star is "juicing" and we can prove it, kick him/her out of the league, sue him for financial loses and call the cops.  Let him spend time in prison like any other common junkie.  Let him/her lose his future, pay hefty restitution to the sport and throw him in prison!  With horse racing, punish the owner/caretakers with Animal Cruelty.

Let our national leaders worry about the national debt and the war in Iraq.  Stop wasting their time with common criminals.

Teams that sell out to another city should be required to keep the team name and all related records. The Indianapolis Colts are not the Baltimore Colts. The Arizona Cardinals have no real "record"or relevant history connecting them to Chicago. The LA Rams should not be linked to the St. Louis Rams. They are really different entities. The Browns got it right -- the name, the record, the history, stays with the city. You want a franchise, you build it from the bottom up.

I don't know where this ridiculous notion got started, anyway, that historical events get picked up and moved around the country like lawn chairs. They don't. The Brooklyn Dodgers didn't have anything to do with southern California; the Milwaukee Braves didn't have anything to do with Georgia; and even though the Washington Senators moved to Minnesota, in the War of 1812 the British didn't burn Minneapolis to the ground. That's not reality.

                                                I got one.

Stop calling world champions to whomever wins in the finals of a United States of America Sports leagues.

Ok, you can keep World Champions of Football. But that's it. Basketball, Baseball, Hokey, also exist in other leagues in the world (create a final between USA and Europe's Teams).

which leagues make it and which dont? there are only around a half dozen european basketball leagues. there isn't even a single champion among european leagues, how could you possibly pick one? also, to which team should an athlete show allegiance? to his professional "league" team who owns his contract, or to his national team...? who would be the champion, the NBA league team or the American national team, especially when one player might actually play for more than one team??

I love the soccer commentary! I'm an avid fan and play every weekend.

What I hate most about the sport is this: when players go down, they have this new thing where they throw their hands over there face as if someone has sprayed them with acid. It doesn't matter where they were fouled, they throw there hands up as if it were the most excruciating pain ever inflicted!

I think several things should happen.

                                                  1) As the player is writhing on the ground, there should be someone reviewing the play on video to determine if the player is obviously faking. If so, he should get red carded. That would stop the foolishness immediately.

                                                  2) If the player who supposedly fouled him gets a yellow or red card and the "injured" player immediately gets up from his agony and trots back on the field, the ref must stop play immediately. The "injured" player must then stand there as the carded player gets to kick him in the crotch.

                                                  3) If the "injured" player is obviously waisting time writhing on the ground and the replay shows no legitimate contact which would cause such pain, the fans of the opposing team get to come onto the field and put the player out of his misery.

                                                  4) If any player ever gives a "knowing grin" after said performance, the opposing team gets to hack him for the rest of the game with impunity.

They should have some form of relegation in both the NFL, MLB and Soccer similar to what they do with soccer in England.  In other words the Lions should drop from the NFL and be replaced by some other team in some other city.  Each year the teams at the bottom are dropped from the league and replaced by new teams.

Agree 100% -  but first, you would need a more structured lower division - so the promoted team has the stadium capable of handling NFL or MLB games. You can relegate the Detroit Lions or the Kansas City Royals but you need teams coming up to have similar ability to handle crowds. You need something better than AAA baseball.

p.s. you'll never get the owners to vote for this!!!

When are they going to legitmize hockey and do away with the fighting?  There is absolutely no room for and no excuse for fighting in any organized professional sport.  Until they do, it's barely one step above the WWF, which is sad because I think hockey players are amazing and extremely talented in what they do on the ice.  My friends defend it as similar to a bench-clearing brawl in a baseball game but that's a lame comparison.  Except for professional boxing, no professional athelete should be allowed to hit another player with his fist, period.  Yes, I know all you hockey fanatics will disagree.

I agree. This one bugs the hell out of me. Every other sport has been improved by reining in the violators, imposing fines, and enforcing the rules. The NFL imposes stiff fines and suspensions for brawling and loss of temper. Didn't Romanowski get fined for spitting? Remember the frequency of bench-clearing incidents in the NBA? I'd get into hockey as a fan if the game were more about the sport and not the encouragement of uncontrolled tempers.

I agree totally, use instant replay to review and find out who started the fight and disqualify him from the game, not both players.  This would prevent a "bench warmer" from having the star player from the other team tossed from the game in the first period.  If a player is removed from 3 games in a season for fighting, remove him for the remainder of the season without pay.

Every other Major League sport has strict rules for fighting, why can't the NHL do the same?  It's a bad image for kids as I've heard many young boys wishing they could "duke it out" with the pitcher that threw a brush by pitch, or the linebacker that threw him to the ground with a facemask.

Speed up baseball.  Make the pitcher pitch and the batter bat.  Years ago tennis reached a point where the defender would delay being ready to receive serve and the server would delay serving.  They put a clock on the process and allowed the umpire to warn and then penalize.  Do the same with pitchers and batters.  Why should a batter be allowed to step out of the box? Eliminate warmup pitches for mid-inning relievers.  They are out in the bullpen warming up.  Why do they need warmus after they get to the mound?

For the NFL, it is time to let players play and coaches coach.  Turn off the headsets, stop the hand signals.  When the game starts, other than detemining subsitutions for injuries, the coaches need to stand and live with the player preparation they made during the previous week.  Let the players play the game not be dictated to from the sidelines.

Adopt some form of the yellow and red card from soccer.  To many times you see flagrant fouls (face masks that yank a players head around) and the fouler just smiles as 15 yards are lost.  If it is unsportsmanlike, then get him out of the game until next week.

For Basketball - when was the last time anyone called traveling?  When did basketball become a full body contact sport?  Unsportsmanlike conduct, send them home, teach the kids there is a penalty for abusing the rules.

Get rid of the offsides rule in Soccer.  It holds down scoring resulting in too many boring or tied games.   The offside rule supposedly exists to stop goal hanging, where a player stands next to the opposing teams goal keeper in the hope that someone can get the ball to him.  This is no different then in basketball where a player could hang back for a long pass but you don't see this happening because teams adjust for it and it weakens your team at the other end.  An offensive player should be able to get an advantage by breaking away from defensive players through speed or stealth.

In both there is way too much going up and down the field (ice) and not enough scoring. This is why soccer and hockey are not very popular with Americans with soccer being the worst. Watching a soccer game is like getting a date with a super hot woman and not even getting a good night kiss.

No, not riveting, hypnotic. It put me to sleep with the constant flow back and forth, and no real legitimate chance of scoring. Where one slight mishap, and the game is over. You can't come back from 1-0, people, that's insurmountable. So I am to devote 3 hours watching this event, and the only action I will see will likely be when I'm in the bathroom? Let's get the hockey goalies' pad girth smaller than the average sumo wrestler, and perhaps enlarge the soccer goal? I can't stand 1-0 scores. I was lucky enough to see one NHL game, Kings v. Wings in 1993. Gretzky scored 3. A rookie scored 3. The final was 10-3. This shouldn't be an abberation. It should be average.

Basketball needs to live with one time-out per half. Currently, they have more time-outs than they do drawn-up plays for the situation.
NO Shootout for Hockey. None. Zero. Zippo. Nada.
Same goes for the DH in baseball. Batters cannot leave the box once they step in unless they are brushed back. Pitchers stay on the mound.
Football needs to get rid of their OT. Home team gets the ball (or defer) and the visitor gets an equal opportunity to score. Plus, eliminate all domes. Football needs to be played outdoors. How about forcing the team scoring a touchdown needing to touch the ball on the ground in the endzone, thereby setting up where they kick the extra point (like Rugby). Widen the hash marks to within ten yards of the sidelines.

All sports - there is nothing wrong with a tie.

It may seem like one innocent play amongst literally 100+ during a game, but when it takes points off the board...or places more points on it, it has a direct effect on the outcome of a game!  This is the single most frustrating thing to deal with in an NBA game!

NFL - Allow personal fouls (roughing the QB or roughing the kicker) to be reviewed.  I know, we've created a monster with our current review system (i.e. too many reviews/too much wasted time), but in the same vein as the NBA floppers, I get so frustrated at seeing a kicker get his big toe stepped on, and he's pulling an acting job that Jack Nicholson would be proud of!  Football is still football and players can still get hit . . . or can they?!

Steapen the penalty for the wide reciever who malls the D-back as he is in prime position for an interception. It makes no sense why they get so many yards and an automatic first down while get barely anything in doing the same exact thing.

Why should a quaterback be treated any different than anyone else who has the ball? You almost never see it called. Why, because I think NFL refs know it's bogus. The NFL is stubborn and probably does not want to admit to Al Davis and the Raiders that the rule is dumb. It's so contribed, most people don't even know what the rule is. Doug Sepe
